When most people hear about pregnancy nausea, they think of “morning sickness” — a little queasiness in the morning, maybe some vomiting here and there, but nothing too serious.
But there’s another level. And it’s called Hyperemesis Gravidarum, or HG.
I didn’t know what HG was until I was living it.
💭 So What Is HG?
Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a rare but severe pregnancy condition that causes extreme, persistent nausea and vomiting. It goes far beyond what’s considered “normal” morning sickness.
Some key facts:
It affects about 1-3% of pregnancies
It can lead to weight loss, dehydration, nutritional deficiencies, and hospitalization
Many women with HG need IV fluids, feeding tubes, or medications just to function
It’s not caused by anxiety, weakness, or a low pain threshold — it’s a real medical condition.
🤒 How Is It Different From Morning Sickness?
Morning Sickness | Hyperemesis Gravidarum |
Nausea (mainly mornings) | Nausea all day, every day |
Occasional vomiting | Vomiting 5–20+ times a day |
Still able to eat and drink | Can’t keep anything down |
Ends after 12–14 weeks | May last the entire pregnancy |
Mild discomfort | Severe pain, isolation, depression |
❤️🩹 The Emotional Toll
What many people don’t talk about is the mental and emotional impact.HG can lead to:
Anxiety & depression
Isolation
Guilt for not enjoying pregnancy
Trauma that lasts even after birth
Many women feel ashamed or silenced — afraid to say, “I’m struggling” because pregnancy is supposed to be beautiful. But HG is not something you can just “push through.” It’s a medical crisis.
👶🏾 Why I'm Talking About It
I created From Bed to Birth because I survived HG, and I don’t want other women to feel alone like I did.
